Wildebeest Migration

Wildebeest migration
browse (1 / 5)

Tanzania is a popular safari holiday destination and encapsulates a truly African journey of abundant wildlife and plentiful plant life amongst rugged and fertile terrain. Unique and popular, these safari holidays are fantastic and unforgettable, providing the very best this East coast country has to offer. One of the main reasons tourists flock to this part of the world is to witness one of Mother Nature’s most mind-blowing spectacles – the Great Migration.

Thoroughly documented and extremely pivotal, this monumental trek has become the symbol of survival for nearly 2 million wildebeest, 200 000 zebra, and half a million Thompson’s gazelle. The migration starts in Tanzania’s greatest wildlife sanctuary the Serengeti National Park, and flows through to the Masai Mara Game Reserve in neighbouring Kenya. The migration usually occurs as these large numbers of herbivores leave their wet habitats in the southern and eastern plains and journey towards the north for drier pastures before returning. Because it is difficult to predict exactly when the trek will begin – due to weather patterns – mobile safari camps located in the Serengeti are fantastic ways to follow the migration.

Of course the migratory patterns of these herbivores lead to a greater presence of predators in the region, which provides tourists with a wonderful opportunity of seeing the likes of the lion, cheetah, wild dog, and hyena agilely stalking their prey. Travellers to the national park can look forward to having a prime view of this awesome sight as the mobile camps are planned around the animals’ movements meaning that visitors are actively involved in one of the greatest occurrences of the animal kingdom.
