Kahawa Shamba

Mount Kilimanjaro has been noted for its beauty and grandeur. But, what ancient ways grew up in the shadow of the mountain? What magnificent cultures were nurtured in its fold? Set up on the slopes of the mighty Kilimanjaro you will find a small village of luxury huts known as Kahawa Shamba, a community-based project that not only aims to uplift the finance of local coffee growers, but also the minds, bodies and spirits of guests that stay at Kawaha Shamba. Accommodation is ample and comfortable, in the shadow of the mighty Kilimanjaro, providing a platform for those who wish to acclimatize before taking on the mighty mountain. Kahawa Shamba is a luxury camp with traditional chagga-style huts that give you accommodation with a difference, bringing you closer to the ancient Swahili generations that have inhabited this, most ancient and beautiful of lands, for many centuries.

Accommodation at Kahawa Shamba consists of:

Built in the traditional chagga-style, the huts provide a rustic, yet luxurious feel. Appearing like a small bird covered in feathers, the huts are covered entirely in charming banana leaf thatch. Inside the huts, guests will be amazed to find twin beds and an elegant en suite bathroom with Western style toilets and a shower. This small camp has a community feel to it, and gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Swahili culture that is familiar with the land and the mighty mountain that towers over all: Kilimanjaro.

Kahawa Shamba is on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, amidst a lush and fertile area that has deep valleys and gorges. A tribe known as the Wachagga makes this lush unspoiled landscape in the shadow of the mountain their home. Immerse yourself in the world of the Swahili that have be-shouldered the great Kilimanjaro for many years, tending to the fields and hunting the vast game in the plains surrounding Kilimanjaro.

While you acclimatise at Kahawa Shamba, guided walks will take you through some areas surrounding Kilimanjaro that many other climbers do not have access to, providing you with the best possible warm-up for your hardest challenge yet. Walks through river valleys and past waterfalls will provide life-time memory store or photo opportunities. Cultural tours to the original traditional huts provide you with a glimpse into the lives of the Swahili, also showing the ancient ways of black smiths and cave-hording of livestock. Relaxing horse rides will also take you through the country tranquility and serenity.
